For the first time, a comprehensive database of the best Virginia fairs from 1857 through 2018 has been assembled.
The National Park Service has digitized the list of Virginia fair pictures by using a database of more than 15,000 pictures from the 1860s to 1920s, the Virginia Historical Society said.
The Virginia Fairs of the Civil War were held on a number of dates during the Civil Wars, but only one was actually a full-scale Civil War event.
It was the Fair of Liberty, which featured the first full-fledged Civil War display.
The Fair of Peace, the largest of its kind in the United States, was held in 1859 and the Fair at Alexandria, which was a major political rally of the time, also was held on April 14.
The last of the Virginia fair was held at the Virginia Museum in 1799.
