“There was a time when you could go out and make a living as a clown, as a parrot, as anything you wanted,” she said.

“I remember, I was doing a show and I had a puppet on the stage.

I’d get on and have a bit of fun and say something to the audience, but I didn’t really know what that was.

Scarborough was a popular, often-bizarre, fairground ride on the Northumberland-Kent coast, and was also popular with the country’s most famous carnival operator, William Rennie. “

And so I wrote a song and it just became a regular thing.”

Scarborough was a popular, often-bizarre, fairground ride on the Northumberland-Kent coast, and was also popular with the country’s most famous carnival operator, William Rennie.

“It was a very different kind of ride,” Ms Hogg said.

In an interview with the Herald Sun in 2003, Ms Huggs, now 87, said she had no regrets about writing the song.

She was only 21 and working on a radio show, but she remembers the thrill of the ride when she first heard it.

“You would think it’s the kind of thing that just happened, you wouldn’t expect it,” she recalled.

Ms Hogg has always had a fondness for the fairground, having worked in the city as a station manager.

And she says she still enjoys going there, as does the family that live nearby.

There are no plans to revive the fair, but Ms Hagg said the attraction would still exist as a destination for locals and tourists alike.

More to come.
